Simmons welcomed her son in September 2020, and started working out as soon as possible after. "My priorities have changed," she says. "I still work out every day for my mental health. But your kid becomes your everything. It changes everything; it changes you. I box, I do yoga, I spin, I strength train. I'm the person who likes to try everything because I just enjoy how it makes me feel."
Simmons stayed active throughout her pregnancy to maintain optimum health. "To avoid the sluggish feeling that accompanies the weight gain and any swelling in the legs and feet, commit to mild activity daily," she said. "It will make you feel better to get your blood and lymph flowing. I don't workout to drop weight while I am pregnant! Because I for sure have gained a healthy amount. Doctors approval I do it to stay active and healthy."
Simmons switches up her workouts depending on which coast she is on. "In LA I did a lot of outdoor workouts… Now, [in NYC] I box," she says. "I've found a love for box/kickboxing. Boxing really helps me tone up. My trainer is teaching me the true dynamic of the sport. I'm always changing the results I want to see with my body. So switching up my exercise routine is great!"
Simmons's fitness brand Built Not Bought emphasizes her philosophy to health and wellness. "I just want people to feel their best, and be confident where they're at," she says. "People feel like you have to be in a certain place to be confident, like having a six-pack or losing 10 lbs, but it's about having the confidence now, working through your insecurities, and being confident in this moment and allowing that to speak for itself."
Simmons has learned the importance of self-love and acceptance. "As a teenager, I struggled with body image. As a grown woman, I've learned to embrace everything about me," she says. "I'm proud of who I am and I love everything about my body. People are always going to have opinions about you. I've learned not to care. I do what makes me happiest, and just don't listen to it."
