Carrie Fisher's Cause of Death Revealed to Be Sleep Apnea, Mom Debbie Reynolds Died of a Stroke
Months after the tragic passings of Carrie Fisher and her mother, Debbie Reynolds, the stars’ causes of death have been revealed.
Carrie sadly died of sleep apnea and a combination of other causes at age 60 on Dec. 27, 2016, the LA County coroner’s office confirmed to the Associated Press on Friday, June 16. TMZ later revealed she had cocaine, morphine, codeine, and oxycodone in her system, but it’s unclear how much of a role, if any, the drugs played in her passing.

Just one day following the Star Wars actress’ death last winter, her mom, Debbie, succumbed to a stroke on Dec. 28, 2016, at age 84.

According to the Singin’ in the Rain star’s death certificate, Debbie passed away from a blood vessel that ruptured and caused bleeding in her brain. Her official cause of death was an intracerebral hemorrhage from high blood pressure, which is essentially a stroke.
Carrie’s cause of death was previously thought to be a heart attack, as the Hollywood icon went into cardiac arrest during a flight from London to LA days before her passing.

Following both actress’ deaths, the mother-daughter duo were laid to rest in a joint memorial service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in LA on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2017. A few days later, Carrie and Debbie were honored with a touching video tribute at the 2017 Golden Globes on Sunday, Jan. 8.

“Hollywood has been around for over 100 years. Five generations built this industry — it’s a big industry [and] sometimes we forget it’s actually a community. A community of families,” host Jimmy Fallon began the award show’s “In Memoriam” segment.

“This past year we lost so many legends and icons, but a few weeks ago we lost a mother and a daughter within just a couple of days,” he continued. “And it was a terrible loss that we all felt. So tonight, we’d like to pay tribute to Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds.” The emotional segment then showed a series of clips of Carrie and Debbie portraying their most notable characters through the years.
