Hunter Biden is an American attorney, businessperson, hedge fund principal, venture capital and private equity fund investor, banker, lobbyist, legal representative for lobbying firms, and artist. He has been Amtrak Vice Chairman of the Board, from July 26, 2006 to January 29, 2009, was a founding board member of Chinese investment company BHR Partners, and served on the board of Ukrainian company Burisma Holdings, one of the country’s largest private natural gas producers. His paintings have been exhibited.

Hunter is the son of teacher Neilia Hunter Biden and politician, attorney, and President of the United States, Joe Biden. His father has been President since January 20, 2021. He has also served as the 47th Vice President of the United States, from January 20, 2009 to January 20, 2017, and, previously, a U.S. Senator from Delaware, from January 3, 1973 to January 15, 2009. He is the brother of Beau Biden, who served as Attorney General of Delaware, from January 2, 2007 to January 6, 2015, and who died in 2015, and Naomi Biden; and the paternal half-brother of social worker, activist, and philanthropist Ashley Biden. Hunter was in a car accident in December 1972, along with his mother, brother, and sister; his mother and sister were killed.

Hunter is Catholic. He is married to South African-American activist and documentary filmmaker Melissa Cohen Biden. He has five children, three, including lawyer Naomi Biden, with his former wife, non-profit executive and writer Kathleen Buhle; a daughter with Lunden Alexis Roberts; and a son with Melissa.

He has ancestry in Maryland going back to the mid 1600s.

Hunter’s patrilineal line can be traced to William Biden, who was born, c. 1787, in Sussex, England, the son of James Biden and Ann Silverlock; and to his wife Mary Elkins.

Hunter’s paternal grandfather was Joseph Robinette Biden (the son of Joseph Harry Biden and Mary Elizabeth Robinette). Hunter’s grandfather Joseph was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and was a used car salesman who had at one point been wealthy. Hunter’s great-grandfather Joseph was an oil businessperson, and was the son of George T. Biden and Mary Emily Liddell. Hunter’s great-grandmother Mary Elizabeth was the daughter of George Hamilton Robinette and Mary A. Hanafee/Hanafy. Hunter’s Robinette lines traces to Allen Robinett/Robinette, who was born, c. 1632, in St. Michael, Queenhithe, London. The name has also been spelled Robanet. Hunter’s great-great-grandmother Mary A. was born in West Virginia, the daughter of John Hanafy/Hanafee, who was Irish, and of Mary Ward, who was born in London, to Irish parents, from Galway, Gaillimh, Ireland.

Hunter’s paternal grandmother was Catherine Eugenia “Jean” Finnegan (the daughter of Ambrose Joseph Finnegan and Geraldine Catharine/Catherine Blewitt). Hunter’s grandmother Catherine was born in Scranton, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania. Ambrose was the son of James Finnegan, who was born in Cooley, County Louth, Ireland, and of Catherine Roche, who was born in New York, or in Ireland, to Irish parents, Thomas Roche and Bridget Fox. Hunter’s great-grandmother Geraldine was the daughter of Edward Francis Blewitt and Mary Ellen Stanton. Edward was a Member of the Pennsylvania State Senate from the 22nd District, from 1907 to 1909. He was born in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, to Irish parents, from Rappagh, co. Mayo, Patrick F. Blewitt and Catharine/Catherine “Kate” Scanlon. Hunter’s great-great-grandmother Mary Ellen was born in Pennsylvania, to Irish parents, James Stanton and Mary Arthurs, who was from County Mayo.

Hunter’s maternal grandfather was Robert Neil Hunter (the son of William Charles Hunter and Christina McEachern/McEachren/McEachron). Robert was born in New York, to Canadian parents, from Ontario. William was born in Toronto, the son of Charles Hunter, whose parents were from Ireland, with his father being from Ulster; and of Mary Ann Walker, whose parents were from Yorkshire, England. Christina was born in Fenelon Falls, Victoria, the daughter of Farquhar McEachern/McEachren, whose family was from Kilmeny, Argyll, and of Catherine/Catharine Graham, whose parents were also Scottish.

Hunter’s maternal grandmother was Louise Basel/Basil (the daughter of George Joseph Basel/Basil/Basl and Naomi Agnes Woodcock). Louise was born in New York. George was the son of Joseph Basl and Marguerite “Maggie” Kurtz, who were from Bavaria, Germany, his father from Weiden in der Oberpfalz, Weiden in der Oberpfalz, and his mother from Kemnath, Schnaittenbach, Amberg-Sulzbach. Naomi was the daughter of Edward Leander Woodcock, whose parents were English, and of Margaretta/Margaret Julie McQueer/McQuire, whose father was Scottish.
